How to Use This Process Map Builder

Name each swimlane after the department, role, or system that owns a group of steps. Then list the process steps in the order they happen, assigning each one to its lane and marking whether it is a start/end point, a process step, or a decision. The preview draws the flow left to right, bending the connector down or up whenever the process hands off to a different lane.

FAQ

What is a cross-functional process map?

A cross-functional process map, also called a swimlane diagram, arranges process steps into horizontal lanes by department, role, or system, making handoffs between groups visible at a glance.

How is this different from a SIPOC or Value Stream Map?

SIPOC stays high level for scoping. A Value Stream Map focuses on material and information flow with cycle times. A process map shows the detailed step-by-step sequence and which role or department owns each step.

What do the step shapes mean?

Rounded end-cap shapes mark the start or end of the process. Rectangles are process steps. Boxes outlined in the accent color are decision points.

Can I export the process map?

Yes. This tool supports print or save-as-PDF, Word-compatible HTML, Excel-compatible spreadsheet output, Google Docs-compatible HTML, and Google Sheets-compatible CSV of the step list.
